Book of Philemon

Such a small insignificant book. Stuck in amongst so many other more significant books. Books with so much more action and significance. I always thought it was too. After all you hardly, if ever, hear a preacher talk about this little tiny book. It is after all ,just about a runaway slave. Who really cares about that?

When I was doing my research for this weeks lesson, I learned so very much about this little obscure book. I discovered that this book is considered by many experts the foremost important book on slavery ever written. We can and should apply so many princilpes that Paul used in this book to our everyday lives.

Both Roman and Mosaic Law allowed for a runaway slave to be punished. As we read the letter that Paul wrote to Philemon asking him to accept the slave Onesimus back without punishing him, Paul never said that slavery might be wrong. He simply reminded Philemon that he was not only a Belierver in Christ, but a Local Church Leader as well and should be setting an example for other Believers thus erasing the line between Master and Slave since Onesimus is now a believer in Christ as well.

FAITH OR SACRIFICE

Tonight we are in the book of HEBREWS. Another short but oh so important book. Many people never read the short books in the later part of our New Testament. Most people read the four gospels and the book of acts then pretty much skip to revelations then get confused and scared and then close their bibles until next church service.

Even though a lot of so called experts spend a lot of time debating the authorship of OUR Book of Hebrews, we know it was a sermon by a church leader, such as a pastor. We also know that it goes into great detail in explaining that Gods Covenant with Abraham is essentially over in that JESUS CHRIST not only brings the new covenant but is in fact THE NEW COVENANT  BETWEEN GOD AND MANKIND! No more animal sacrifices,in that Jesus Christ will be the ultimate sacrifice for all our sins here on earth.

This really shook up the established religion of the time even though for hundreds of years their own prophets had foretold of the coming of this very Messiah. They got so mad that they even killed the christian church leader of Jerusalem with a sword who just happened Jesus’ very own earthly brother James!

They didn’t want to believe that this lowly poor carpenter could in anyway be higher in Gods Kingdom than their own Moses, and especially not higher than the angels from heaven! This was a poor carpenters son from lowly backwater Bethlehem!! Certainly the prophesied Messiah from God on High would at the very least from Royal Blood!

NEVER TAKE LIFE FOR GRANTED

Never take life for granted. We hear this all the time. In fact we hear it so much that we don’t really hear it anymore, it is one of those sayings that seems to come into one ear and out the other.

Our bible  talks about this very thing many, many times. In fact in JAMES 4:14 it is written : Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.  Clement of Alexandria who lived from 150 until 215 A.D. said that ALL OUR LIFE IS A CELEBRATION FOR US; WE ARE CONVINCED, IN FACT, THAT GOD IS ALWAYS EVERYWHERE. WE SING WHILE WE WORK…WE PRAY WHILE WE CARRY OUT ALL LIFE’S OTHER OCCUPATIONS. In these words we are reminded that this day is GOD’S creation and is to be treasured and savored.

In other words we should concentrate on the day we are in with smiles on our faces and kind words on our lips. After all this is God’s day and he has given us clear instructions on how to use it. We are commanded to rejoice and be glad. So LET THE CELEBRATION BEGIN!!!!!!

In 1 PETER 1:3-7   We are reminded that thru the crucifixation and resurrection of OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST our future is reserved in HEAVEN. We may have to suffer a little grief or trials here on earth, These come simply to prove that your faith is genuine and of greater worth than gold or anything else.

We all go thru trials and temptations in our lives but as long as we keep our eyes on the prize and live like it says in 1 PETER 2:11-12 abstain from sinful desires that wage war on us daily, live such good lives as we move about daily that, even as they make fun of our faith and attack us from all sides and accuse us of being wrong, they still see our good deeds and kindness and by doing this they see the Glory of God.

In tonight’s live service I will be using the following scripture  james 4:14,1 peter 1:3-7,1 peter 1: 13-15,1 peter 2:11-12,luke 17:11-19.
